Are you having trouble finding the right running shoes?

This is how I do it and it might help you.

Finding the ideal pair of running shoes is a journey i think every runner can relate to. As a triathlon coach and dedicated runner myself, I totally understand the importance of finding shoes that not only fit well but also enhance performance and prevent injuries. In this article, I’ll share my personal insights and experiences on how to choose the right running shoes and break them in effectively.

Finding the Right Running Shoes:
It took me a while to understand my foot type to choose the perfect pair of running shoes. In my case- I have a low arch and pronation – by knowing this, I’ve been able to narrow down my options and focus on shoes that offer the ideal balance of support and cushioning. It has taken me a long time, and sometimes I still find it confusing since my feet and run gait has changed as I become more experienced. Some years I stick to the same brand, and then they do changes on the new model and it doesn’t fit well. I’ve learned to never go for what’s trendy, if the shoe doesn’t fit, then it doesn’t matter how cool the shoe is. I have narrow feet, yet, I like to run in wide toe box, so my feet can spread out. My feet also swells some in heat and longer runs.

I prefer to go to a specialty running store, where I’m greeted by knowledgeable staff who have analyzed my gait and recommends shoes tailored to my specific needs. Their knowledge, and with my own intuition, has helped me towards shoes that feel like they were made for my feet. I have found insert for my low arch is helping. However, some shoes, specially stability shoes has already high arch support, if so, I either take them out and replace them with my inserts or leave them if I feel they fit good.

Considering the different terrain I do during my triathlon training, I’ve learned to select shoes designed for the different surfaces, from rugged trails to smooth pavement. Each pair serves a unique purpose, providing the traction and stability I need to handle any challenge that comes my way.

Breaking In My New Shoes:
Once I’ve found the perfect pair, the process of breaking them in begins. I’ve learned to approach this time with patience and mindfulness, knowing that rushing into long-distance runs in brand-new shoes can lead to discomfort and even injury.

Instead, I start slowly, taking my new shoes for short walks or easy runs to allow both the shoes and my feet to adjust gradually. With each step, I listen to my body, paying close attention to any areas of rubbing or irritation. If discomfort arises, I don’t hesitate to make adjustments or seek alternative solutions. Some running stores have great return policy that allows you to return them even if you tried them out and they are clean and not worn down.

As I gradually increase the mileage in my new shoes, I alternate them with my older pairs to give my feet a break and extend the life of my footwear. They say with high performance running, a pair will last from 250-350 miles, so for some it’s a new pair every six month.

So to give a conclusion, the journey to finding the perfect running shoes and breaking them in is a very personal and rewarding experience. By understanding your unique needs, seeking expert guidance, and approaching the process with patience and care, you will be able to find shoes that support you every step of the way.

As I continue to pursue my passion for fitness and triathlon coaching, I’m grateful for the right pair of helps me achieve my goals and reach new heights in my athletic endeavors.
